In response to fahdp's comment about punishment of adultery in Aceh, International Crisis Group (ICG) has just published a really good article titled Islamic Law and Criminal Justice in Aceh.
The article gives a brief history of how sharia law evolved in Aceh and the issues in enforcement.

i'm surprised that the penalty for drinking was 40 lashes while for fornication it was 3-9 plus a fine. i have heard of caning being used instead of death, but i thought the sentence would be much stiffer. 40 lashes for having a beer is a lot!
oops never mind. zina is 100 lashes. shows how much i know.
